Wildlife and Environment Zimbabwe (WEZ) - The Organisation

Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe is a membership based Registered Private Voluntary Organisation, founded in 1927. Membership consists of individuals and organisations that care for the future of Zimbabwe's environment, its wildlife, and its people.

Objectives

To fulfil our mission, we have set ourselves certain objectives:

  • To promote environmental awareness and education throughout the country using the five EE centres, To help manage wildlife in protected National Parks and Game Parks, as well as in areas outside protected areas,
  • To carry out field activities such as snare sweeps, animal rescue, development of new natural reserves and protection of endangered species and their habitats,
  • To do research on the environment and wildlife,
  • To network with local, regional and international organisations that are involved in wildlife and environmental conservation, management and protection, and
  • To provide wildlife and environmental information through the ’Zimbabwe Wildlife’ magazine, newsletters and other publications.

Organisational Set-up

General Assembly
The top decision making body of WEZ is the General Assembly. At its annual meeting, the National council, as well as the branch chairmen, are voted for. Each individual member and each corporate member has a single vote.

WEZ Governing Body
WEZ is headed by a National Council made up of a President, 3 Vice Presidents and a Treasurer elected by the Annual General Meeting of members, plus the 11 Chairmen of the Branches. The 16 members council is the policy and main decision-making body of the organisation.

The Administrative Body
WEZ has a National Office that is responsible for policy implementation, budgeting and allocation of financial and other resources. The office is also responsible for co-ordination, networking with other organisations, fundraising, and the membership drive. The office is headed by the Director who is supported by four other permanent employees.

The Branches
WEZ carries out its mandate by operating through its 11 Branches located in the following areas; Chipinge, Gweru, Kariba, Lowveld, Makonde, Manicaland, Mashonaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland, Midlands and Musengezi. The branches are run by a branch committee that is headed by a chairman. The branches are fairly independent and very often publish their own newsletters and sometimes magazines. The branches are the ideal platform for everyone to get involved in conservation.

The Wildlife and Environmental Trust Fund of Zimbabwe
The Trust Fund was set up in 1997 for the purpose of providing financial resources to promote environmental education throughout Zimbabwe, and for funding projects related to the conservation and sustainability of wildlife in all its forms. The Trust Fund will also provide finances required to pay professional and experts to conduct special assignments such as research on wildlife and conservation issues, and provide funds for rehabilitation of equipment, provision of water, fencing, or training.

Editorial Board
The editorial board headed by a chairman ensures the production of the ‘Zimbabwe Wildlife’ magazine. All members of the board are volunteers. The magazine solely finances itself through advertisements.
